If your staircase is starting to look a little worn and you want to give it an updated look, staining the steps is a quick and easy way to do it. Plus, it’s a project that you can do yourself in just a few hours. Here’s how to get started.

First, gather your supplies. You’ll need a putty knife, a screwdriver, sandpaper, wood filler, a clean cloth, wood stain, and a paintbrush. Next, use the putty knife to remove any old paint or varnish from the staircase. If there is any loose paint, scrape it off with the knife. Then, use the screwdriver to remove any nails or staples. Once the staircase is prepped, it’s time to sand. This will help create a smooth surface for the stain to adhere to. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and work your way up to a finer grit. After sanding, use the wood filler to fill in any holes or cracks. Once the filler is dry, sand it down so it’s flush with the rest of the staircase. Now you’re ready to stain. Choose a color that you like and brush it on in even strokes. You may need to apply multiple coats depending on the look you’re going for. Once the stain is dry, you’re done! Your staircase will have a whole new look that you can enjoy for years to come.

Types of staircases and when staining is necessary

When it comes to staircases, there are two main types: indoor and outdoor. Indoor staircases are typically made of wood, while outdoor staircases can be made of wood, concrete, or stone.
