When you press the button on your garage door remote, the transmitter sends signals to the sensors in the motor. The electric motor is “activated” and uses the hardware and spring system to help “lift” the garage door. All the mechanisms play a crucial role in the functionality of a garage door. The mechanisms or hardware system in a garage door are;
Motor
All garage doors openers have an electric motor. The average horsepower in a motor ranges from ½ horsepower to 1½ horsepower. The heavier the garage door is, the more horsepower the motor will need.
Chain, Belt, or Screw Drive
Every garage door opener has either a chain, belt, or screw Drive that works within it as a part of the pulley system (the part that helps the garage door open and close).
Springs
There are two different types of springs in a garage door; torsion and extension. Torsion springs last about 10 years while extension springs need to be replaced every 7 years.
Hinges
The hinges are the hardware installed in the middle and on the ends of the panels to help keep them in place and to make the garage door moveable (bend, fold, etc.).
Rollers
Rollers are the wheels installed inside of the hinges that allow the garage door to move along the track.
Tracks
Tracks help with movement and allow the garage door to roll. There are typically three installed on a garage door and consist of both horizontal and vertical.
Safety Standards
There are certain safety standards applied to garage door openers. This safety standard, implemented by the U.S. federal government, requires all residential garage door openers to have;
• An alternative to detach the garage door from the opener in case someone becomes entrapped. There is a red emergency release handle on the inside, typically attached to the curved door arm.
• A mechanism that can reverse the motion of a moving garage door within two seconds. This law is enforced to prevent someone from getting trapped.
• An alternative method to evaluate the quality of the electronic, entrapment-protection circuits that are intended to reduce risks of injury, electric shock, or fire.
• A way to connect another external entrapment-sensing device or a way to enhance it.
