How to Write Apartment Address

If you want to write an apartment address, it’s important to ensure that you have the right address and that you follow the appropriate steps. Unfortunately, failing to do so can result in anything you send not arriving. Learn more about how to write apartment addresses below.

1. Confirm the Apartment Address

The first step is the most important one, and it requires you to confirm the apartment address. You need to make sure you have every part of the address before you even start to write it.

To ensure that you have the right address, we recommend using Information.com’s address lookup tool. All you need to do is enter the information you have, and Information.com will help confirm their information.

In fact, even if you don’t have their address, you can enter someone’s name into the tool to find it.

2. Write the Recipient’s Name

When it’s time to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, start with the recipient’s name. Typically, all you need is their first and last name. However, some people may prefer to have their formal titles, so if someone is a doctor, you may want to include that.

If you’re sending something to a business that rents a location from a building, the process is similar. You’ll need to include the name of the business or at least the name of the person you’re sending the item to in that building.

3. Write the Street Address

Next, it’s time to write the street address. This is where things get tricky because you need to use the appropriate apartment designator. For most residential apartments, the common designators include:

  • Apartment (APT)
  • Building (BLDG)
  • Floor (FL)
  • Unit (Unit)
  • Room (RM)

While these are the common designators for a residential apartment, if you plan on sending something to a business address, it may look a little different. Instead, you may need to use Suite (STE) or Department (DEPT).

It’s also possible for a “#” sign to be used in place of one of these designators. If this happens, you’ll need to use that instead. Overall, an apartment address will likely look something like this: 123 Lollipop Lane APT 111.

Choosing the right designation is essential if you want whatever you’re sending to end up in the right place.

4. Write the State and Country

Last but not least, you can finish the address. You’ll want to write out the state and zip code for most packages being sent in the United States. You may also need to include a stamp or a packing slip, but that depends on what you’re sending.

Also, don’t forget to write the country as well. This needs to be done in all capital letters, even if you’re writing out the full name of the country and not an abbreviation. That said, this is something you only have to worry about for international shipping.

Our Final Thoughts on How to Write Apartment Address

Now that you know how to write apartment addresses, nothing should be stopping you from sending whatever it is that you need to send. While it may seem simple at first, our biggest piece of advice is to always make sure you’re sending something to the right place.

This is why we always recommend a tool like Information.com. It can help you make sure you have the right designator, which can be the difference between a package being sent back to you or making it to its destination.
